ABOUT
FRIENDS OF
FORTY OAKS

Friends of Forty Oaks is a community-led 501(c)(3) working to restore and protect Forty Oaks Nature Preserve — a rare 10-acre urban greenspace in the heart of Clarkston. We care for the land, support wildlife habitat, and expand access to nature for one of Georgia’s most diverse communities. Through volunteer stewardship, environmental education, and conservation programming, we’re building a healthier ecosystem and a welcoming place for learning, connection, and community well-being.

MISSION & HISTORY.

MISSION

Friends of Forty Oaks inspires community stewardship of the Forty Oaks Nature Preserve through conservation, education, and volunteer engagement. We work to protect wildlife habitat, expand access to nature, honor local heritage, and support the well-being of Clarkston’s diverse community by caring for this rare urban forest in partnership with residents and the City of Clarkston.

HISTORY

Forty Oaks Nature Preserve traces back to the historic Sutton family homestead, once a place of civic leadership and community gathering in Clarkston. The farmhouse remains a rare surviving structure connected to the city’s early civic and social life.

The surrounding forest and creek were later protected as public greenspace, but over the decades the site became overgrown and under-resourced. Friends of Forty Oaks formed to re-engage the community, restore ecological health, and support the long-term preservation and use of this land. Today, we work alongside volunteers, neighbors, and the City of Clarkston to care for the preserve and create opportunities for nature education and engagement.

WHAT WE’RE WORKING ON AT FORTY OAKS.

Our work combines hands-on volunteer stewardship with long-term ecological restoration to support a healthier forest and stream system.

PARTNERS.

Friends of Forty Oaks is grateful to work alongside a growing list of organizations that share our commitment to conservation, community stewardship, and environmental education. These partnerships strengthen our capacity, deepen our impact, and help ensure the long-term health of Forty Oaks Nature Preserve.
